New Rules Place More Limits on Pain Clinics

For the second straight year, Florida lawmakers have approved strict new rules for pain clinics, this time limiting the number of pills that can be sold to patients, curbing advertising and imposing tougher standards for doctors and clinic owners.

Lawmakers hope the new rules approved Thursday will cripple South Florida's flourishing pain-clinic industry, the prime source of illegal prescription drugs in the eastern United States. These clinics, which number almost 1,000 statewide, also have been blamed for an epidemic of prescription-pill overdoses in Florida.

Gov. Charlie Crist is expected to sign the bill, which passed unanimously in both chambers of the Legislature.

Commentary: Why Physicians Oppose The Health Care Reform Bill

After the debate has ended and the lobbyists have moved on to their next clients, health care will be left the way it started, a physician and a patient sitting in a room trying as best as they can to prolong health and forestall sickness. Fortunately the many victories and losses claimed by both ends of the political spectrum will not change this shared pursuit.

So then why has reform that promises to get millions more in a discourse with their doctors been so polarizing? Making sure more Americans have health insurance can only be a major victory, right? Too bad the medical establishment is not celebrating. In fact, the mood in those exams rooms is downright morose.

Register Today to Attend the Most Exciting ASIPP Annual Meeting Ever!

Mark your calendars now to attend ASIPP's 12th annual meeting will be held June 26-30,2010 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City.

We are offering three separate sessions focused on the Future of Interventional Pain Management: Evidence-Based Medicine, Comparative Effectiveness, and Practice Management. We are building on the information presented last year, while encompassing the changes in the legislation and political environment. We have several prominent speakers in the line-up, such as, Dr. Roger Chou; Dr. Gabor Racz; Medical Economist CEO, J.D. Kleinke; Founder and President of the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review; Deputy Assistant Administrator, and many others.

In addition to the information-packed presentations on EBM and Comparative Effectiveness, we will also offer a practice management series of presentations, which will cover the essential coding and compliance lectures. This series is ideal for physicians and is invaluable for their staff. You could easily consider sending your staff to this meeting as an investment. They will walk away armed with the information they need to better understand the billing and coding issues they face on a daily basis.

Since last year's gala celebration was such a success, we decided to reprise this event with a celebration in the theme of An Evening in the Windy City. The evening will start with a cocktail mixer and move right into dinner, a brief business meeting, awards, and then entertainment from comedian and hypnotist, Flip Orley. After this, we will crank-up the fun and begin an evening of socializing, dancing and celebrating.

New this year, the North American Neuromodulation Society and the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians are joining forces to bring to you the 12th Annual Legislative Session. On Monday, June 28, we will prepare for our Capitol Hill visits. Tuesday morning, June 29th, we will once again go as a group to Capitol Hill and make our voices heard. This is your opportunity to speak with your representatives and senators about the legislative issues that affect you and your practice.

For Capitol Hill security purposes, if you plan to attend the Legislative sessions, please inform our office and provide your name and address. This pertains to those who are just coming to the congressional speeches as well as those who will have scheduled meetings with their state's government officials. Medicare Pay: SGR fatigue

Juliette Madrigal-Dersch, MD, walked away from Medicare four years ago and has rarely looked back. Frustrated with the program's condition, the internist in Marble Falls, Texas, decided to see Medicare patients only on a private-contracting basis.

That means neither she nor her patients can claim any payment from Medicare. It also means she can charge what her services actually cost, not just what the government says it will pay. She also can choose not to charge anything, as is her policy for patients age 90 and older.

The decision to cut ties with Medicare -- and some of her older patients in the process -- was difficult at first. But now, Dr. Madrigal-Dersch says she could not imagine still being associated with a program whose pay system has crumbled to such a degree that Congress has resorted to patching scheduled cuts of more than 20% for as little as a month at a time.

Infusion Pumps Targeted for Tighter FDA Scrutiny

Chicago -- The Food and Drug Administration is dramatically changing its approach to regulating medical devices, announcing in April that it will impose stricter safety standards for infusion pumps as a class rather than dealing with problems on a case-by-case basis.

The change comes after 710 deaths associated with malfunctioning infusion pumps used in homes and hospitals during the last five years. The agency has received 56,000 adverse-event reports regarding the devices during that time period and issued 87 recalls -- 14 of those in the FDA's highest-risk class I category.

New Missouri Law Requires Timely Payments from Insurers to Providers

JEFFERSON CITY, MO - Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon signed a bill into law last week that requires health insurance companies to speed up claims payments to physicians, hospitals and other healthcare providers.

The new law spells out responsibilities for providers filing claims, giving providers and insurers a clear definition of a clean claim. It requires insurers to either pay or deny claims within 45 days of receipt.
