Make Medicare GME formula more accountable, MedPAC says

Washington -- Medicare financing of graduate medical education must be overhauled as part of the broader goal of health delivery reform, says the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission.

As part of its annual June report to Congress, MedPAC recommended increasing accountability for Medicare GME payments and making public more information about Medicare's payments and teaching costs. The commission also called for studies to examine specific aspects of health work force training.

CMS proposes expansion of Medicare preventive services

WASHINGTON - The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has proposed a regulation that would implement preventive health benefits created under the Affordable Care Act for seniors and persons with disabilities who rely on Medicare for their healthcare coverage.

The new rule would expand Medicare coverage beginning Jan. 1 to include wellness visits and most preventive services, according to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. It would also boost payments for wellness services provided by primary care physicians and create wellness payment incentives for general surgeons and other healthcare providers.

Experts Urge Reform of Global Drug Policy

VIENNA - Policies that criminalize drug users fuel the spread of AIDS and should be reformed, experts preparing for an international conference said Monday.

Instead, governments, international organizations and the U.N. should promote policies that include opiate substitution therapy and needle and syringe programs that have been shown to reduce HIV rates without increasing rates of drug use, said the experts from organizations such as the International AIDS Society, the International Center for Science in Drug Policy and the British Columbia Center for Excellence in HIV/AIDS.
