On May 15-17, 2009, ASIPP will hold a specialty review course and cadaver workshop in Verbebroplasty, Kyphoplasty,and Sacroplasty.
This intensive review course and hands-on workshop is a CME activity designed to prepare physicians seeking credentialing and as an in-depth review of vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty and sacroplasty. The 3-day event is an excellent way to begin learning new skills or to assist you in improving your existing skills.

Doctor admits pain studies were frauds, hospital says |

In what may be among the longest-running and widest-ranging cases of academic fraud, one of the most prolific researchers in anesthesiology has admitted that he fabricated much of the data underlying his research, said a spokeswoman for the hospital where he works (Harris, The New York Times, March 10, 2009)
United's variable contract agreement, which the company said was based on a "progressive RVU" methodology, will be replaced April 1 by one based on Medicare's 2008 resource-based relative value scale.

Physicians are going to court to fight what they call an onslaught of scope of practice expansions by a growing number of allied health professionals. Increasingly, the medical profession is mounting legal challenges against state boards and others on issues such as nurse anesthetists performing interventional pain management and podiatrists being allowed to treat ankles as well as feet.

President Obama's budget chief isn't sugarcoating his message to health insurance executives: the party is over. MRIs may burn patients who wear drug patches |

Federal health officials have warned that patients who wear nicotine or other drug patches during MRI scans risk burns, because some patches contain tiny metal elements that can be heated by the device's huge magnet. Patients should consult their doctors on whether to replace or reuse patches after removal for scans, officials said. The alert is the latest in a string of safety warnings involving magnetic resonance imaging that have resulted from the unpredictable effects of the strong magnets used in MRI devices (Harris, New York Times, March 6, 2009).

Gupta opts out of surgeon general consideration |

Sanjay Gupta, MD, a neurosurgeon and CNN's chief medical correspondent, has withdrawn his name from consideration as surgeon general of the United States. Gupta said he would likely have had to give up practicing had he taken the job. In addition, the 39-year-old and his wife are expecting their third daughter any time, and the government job would have meant long periods away from his family, he said. Gupta said that although he had not been formally nominated, he had spoken with senior members of the Obama administration who made it clear he was their choice (CNN, March 6, 2009).

Wal-Mart plans to market digital health records system |

Wal-Mart Stores is striding into the market for electronic health records, seeking to bring the technology into the mainstream for physicians in small offices. The company plans to team its Sam's Club division with Dell for computers and eClinicalWorks for software. Wal-Mart says its package deal of hardware, software, installation, maintenance, and training will make the technology more accessible and affordable, undercutting rival health information technology suppliers by as much as half (Lohr, New York Times, March 10, 2009).

The Online Abstract Submission (see step-by- step procedures below) for the 11th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP) is now open. The meeting will be held June 27- June 30, 2009 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, VA.
To be considered for a presentation at the meeting, abstracts must be submitted and completed by the submission deadline of April 20, 2009.
