Brown's Senate Win Creates Health Reform Dilemma for Democrats

In what many are calling one of the biggest political upsets in American history, Republican Scott Brown beat Democrat Martha Coakley in the special Senate election in Massachusetts Tuesday, which ends the Democrats' super majority in the Senate and could allow Republicans to filibuster health reform legislation.

Brown garnered 52% of the vote compared to Coakley, the commonwealth's attorney general, who picked up 47% of the vote. The Republican will complete the final two years of the late Edward Kennedy's Senate term.

Prescription Opioid Painkillers Linked to Overdoses in Study

Jan. 18 (Bloomberg) -- More doctors are prescribing oxycodone, morphine and other opioid painkillers for back pain, arthritis and headache, leading to potentially fatal overdoses, a study said.

Researchers looked at pharmacy files for adults with chronic pain who had been given at least three opioid prescriptions over three months. They found that 51 patients of 9,940 had an overdose, and six died, according to the study published today in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Healthcare Employment Still Rising in 2010

WASHINGTON - Employment in the U.S. healthcare sector increased by approximately 21,500 jobs in December, while the national unemployment rate remained unchanged at 10.0 percent, according to recent data from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The biggest healthcare job gains were in ambulatory care, especially in physician offices and home healthcare services. Of these jobs, 8,900 were in physicians' offices and 8,000 in home healthcare services. Outpatient care centers gained 2,500 jobs in December.

Drug Abuse in US Prisons is Tough to Stamp Out

Richard Pillajo, a wellness education officer at a Florida state prison, strayed beyond his job description, according to investigators who arrested him last year. He allegedly planned to smuggle cocaine, marijuana and hydrocodone pills to inmates for a payoff of $2,500.

Florida's corrections secretary, Walt McNeil, praised the investigators from his own department who cracked the case. Yet official annual reports suggest these investigators, like their counterparts in many states, are playing a frustrating version of Whack-a-Mole as they try to keep illegal drugs out of America's prisons.

Is Marijuana a Medicine?

Charlene DeGidio never smoked marijuana in the 1960s, or afterward. But a year ago, after medications failed to relieve the pain in her legs and feet, a doctor suggested that the Adna, Wash., retiree try the drug.

Ms. DeGidio, 69 years old, bought candy with marijuana mixed in. It worked in easing her neuropathic pain, for which doctors haven't been able to pinpoint a cause, she says. Now, Ms. DeGidio, who had previously tried without success other drugs including Neurontin and lidocaine patches, nibbles marijuana-laced peppermint bars before sleep, and keeps a bag in her refrigerator that she's warned her grandchildren to avoid.
