Medicare 'doc fix' may cost $200B

Doctors and seniors lobbying to stave off looming annual Medicare cuts have won a reprieve of sorts but are still pushing for a permanent fix.    The Senate on Thursday passed so-called pay-go legislation that would require Congress to pay for much of its future spending without adding to the deficit, but it exempted $82 billion from the requirement to prevent reductions to doctors Medicare reimbursement rates.    Politico <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102985250640&s=1413&e=001QHg0uHQlcZluJpf1j2AocftrbMMLvOcJrukOnBM-RRL1n1exohmzP9ntYTbDvDLispDf6wjbSr_vtL2pNyYqI692XgtamxFacSnnmGxYFv0jPisc4tnmcm4WEVPj60K96BxsVAzTffT78AES5Phc4MRDVFlpAp0d>

Help Haiti: AMA Registers Physician Volunteers

Doctors interested in going to Haiti to provide medical assistance can enter themselves in a new volunteer physician registry set up by the American Medical Association and the National Disaster Life Support Foundation.    The AMA plans to use the registry to help coordinate federal government and private-sector medical efforts responding to the devastation caused by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Jan. 12 and was followed by several aftershocks. Almost 200,00 Haitians are injured, the country's government estimates.    American Medical Assoction <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102985250640&s=1413&e=001QHg0uHQlcZliujAnGO7w2wbBck9rpvV_iMxiU3cQFRVQx00vGWueua3k_CMejmlKbabxCtN-9NmZQOlPKQo2QfuyR_krlBILW7Lx8sSHz0EHyOSCJcJs2ZS8ix2goe-P-7l0JvD-Gwzh4bHKPqY4v8mw8GxLpiEh80KBq4Q930o=>

Obama's Proposed Budget: More Money for Health IT, Medicare, Medicaid, NIH

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) would see almost a 10% increase from the current fiscal year under President Barack Obama's proposed federal budget for fiscal 2011 released today. Included in the budget are numerous areas promoting healthcare reform, including additional funding for health information technology and comparative effectiveness research.    Of the $900 billion proposed for HHS, the lion share is targeted toward Medicare at $489 billion, after recouping an anticipated $722 million through revamped efforts to detect waste, fraud, and abuse. States would receive $290 billion for Medicaid, which includes an additional $25.3 billion to extend by six months those increases included under last year's economic recovery act. Both amounts represent about a 9% increase from 2010.    Healthleaders Media <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102985250640&s=1413&e=001QHg0uHQlcZk_v5cpaEjPhZ8ygl1_TxO4uW0Hw5aj3VnPf62cGnqZ6mrxYuMnx5HWV9pfqPFRT-JRreXZuypfXDtq8MiW_yh-YxS1i6MQe1n7NIcD_ch-wDajxa3vDZeUzN2Lx42x5CauZQb6r1OiC1OeGW9bqhMaym4YxqCCZh9N9mZbubokkoe4w4L4x8XwuUn2zNvS>

W.Va. Senate Takes Aim at Prescription Drug Abuse

Faced with one of the highest fatal overdose rates in the country, the West Virginia Senate introduced legislation Wednesday aimed at curbing the state's problem with prescription drugs.    Seven bills have been introduced, including five on Wednesday, by a special task force of senators appointed by Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin. The time has come, lawmakers said, to provide a comprehensive set of solutions to a problem that reaches into every county    Bloomberg Business Week <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102985250640&s=1413&e=001QHg0uHQlcZlWKTfefbjgnN2vg6lDuY2hV6SKanUrAbayX_0liTPgtdGd7cTb00n6-puRjOA95Xb16IisJ1h_RI3R9eSvEicE8xKcz3yJboIvtasyYLPqa65ORehyILpLYao9hJTtqpICi7ydiBgphwkO-vFdll7HmWkxs4MkF8c=>

Obama Administration Issues Rules Requiring Parity in Treatment of Mental, Substance Use Disorders

The Departments of Health and Human Services, Labor and the Treasury today jointly issued new rules providing parity for consumers enrolled in group health plans who need treatment for mental health or substance use disorders.    The rules we are issuing today will, for the first time, help assure that those diagnosed with these debilitating and sometimes life-threatening disorders will not suffer needless or arbitrary limits on their care, said Secretary Sebelius.  I applaud the long-standing and bipartisan effort that made these important new protections possible.    US Department of Health and Human Services <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102985250640&s=1413&e=001QHg0uHQlcZl35jIIO-0OA33VLolM_yoxFI0LIr5rSqEd4U-LYMPdROnMEzxfLjPH_otFL4kkjrSdsSdsRrCdujAj2o5gYuxqM7p7EtwBSNd48D0L055OJsJcl2kHVOF7-aHVDB6CSb5dKYQgOs5bvXviXFPcMItBDyW5q0l8ccs=>

Doctors Sue To Stop Unsupervised Nurse Anesthetists from Administering Anesthesia

Surgical patients are being put at risk because a new California regulation allows nurse anesthetists to administer anesthesia without the supervision of a physician, claims a lawsuit filed against California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger by two large physician groups Tuesday.    "It's a patient safety issue when you have absolutely no supervision from a physician; it's very risky," says Francisco Silva, general counsel for the California Medical Association, which filed the complaint jointly with the California Society of Anesthesiologists.    Health Leaders Media <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102985250640&s=1413&e=001QHg0uHQlcZkEBfFLmiIiyE1pOKWxnctXATM-RVsg0s_yEWyehh_56GixGdh4WPPG_s5jNqUm6FVBIRdI4oh9zO_nVAkg7HByxqsylzjbgyk5xuepA2yic9Eg-aoI_iOlFJXAziuSIJf3tlTDnU4TAH1b6OkGtgI94HDT1Eq1TB200VAIT0XEPZXEDySb-x3iTudVlT6M>

Medical Journal Retracts Study Linking Autism to Vaccine

The medical journal The Lancet on Tuesday retracted a controversial 1998 paper that linked the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine to autism.    The study subsequently had been discredited, and last week, the lead author, Dr. Andrew Wakefield, was found to have acted unethically in conducting the research. The General Medical Council, which oversees doctors in Britain, said that "there was a biased selection of patients in The Lancet paper" and that his "conduct in this regard was dishonest and irresponsible."    CNN <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102985250640&s=1413&e=001QHg0uHQlcZmz9Rwj016BC0AZEFUYdgX0onlakQDlN2drsgEMDMH4r_pO8UXmkUAOUOExeBmYkNlkBmDxFBKY002GcNLWHB1NBNXK-TLWYcmDMuso9lcRGb1B9TWqytHfQekwKtpcXHN2JDu_qw0FjU119oQA0b4cr0qwdVWw0ClaJTTVdTyQwpfFLExMju9o>

Caregivers can be Part of Physician-Patient Relationship

The American College of Physicians has issued a position paper to help guide physicians through the ethical challenges that can arise when the physician-patient relationship is broadened to include caregivers.    The paper emphasizes the need for respect of patients' dignity, rights and values, and provides guidance for effective communication among all parties.    American Medical Association <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102985250640&s=1413&e=001QHg0uHQlcZmCdsHznaRYAgIWlPr4cnmG9h-WrU177TblcB7IIBFGSCKU3sdLnaRgf-T4UvjaAthfKbrQ_rRPAFYWKztuQbgp2GobjMazXqsfZ7YzpF24IC29jvAvhF0OD2U50-4TXpi0C5EKskrBSLVuEo-imNQcntXHeSIsj7A=>
