Congress is Considering Medicare Fix: Contact Your Officals Today!

Congress is currently discussing a Medicare Package fix to address the pending cuts which means they need to hear form their constituents immediately. Additionally Senator Jim Bunning and Rep. Ed. Whitfield has created ASC language that if added on the the Medicare legislation, would save interventional pain management from the drastic cuts we currently face. We can not afford to put this off until a later date.

It is important that we begin contacting the members of the Senate Finance Committee immediately. The language must be added to the Medicare legislation by this committee before it can move forward. The committee members are as follows:

We need members who are constituents in the committee members' states to contact their senators as soon as possible. We have also created a new Capwiz letter in an effort to notify our legislators of this situation . We are facing devastating physician reimbursement cuts and even greater cuts to ASC and office-based procedures. While it may seem that ASCs are only the problem of those working in surgery centers, this is not the case. We must face the reality that our true problem is the consistent unfair cuts to IPM procedures ACROSS the board.

It will take a concerted effort on the part of the entire ASIPP membership if we are to get the ears and eyes of Congress and convince them to act. If someone on the committee is your state senator, please take the sample letter provided, place it on your letterhead and send it directly to him or her today. A direct call to their office is also encouraged. (contact information is provided in the links above).

You may send a letter addressing the issues through Capwiz: http://capwiz.com/asipp/issues/alert/?alertid=11058511&type=CO

Our government officals need to hear from our patients as well. This is easy to accomplish; print out the patient letter we have provided and ask all your patients to sign it (the last page of the word document for your state, see link in paragraph above). After you obtain these signatures your staff can send them as a Capwiz letter using the following link: http://capwiz.com/asipp/issues/alert/?alertid=11058731&type=CO

If you have any questions, call the ASIPP office for assistance: 270-554-9412.

Crimeproof Your Practice: How to Improve Office Safety

In February, David Glener, MD, was seriously injured after a would-be patient came to his office, caused a disturbance in the waiting room and struck the Port St. Lucie, Fla., pain management doctor with a walking cane.

"This has ruined my life," said Dr. Glener, who has undergone two surgeries to repair a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder. "I have not been able to do procedures. I am struggling to see patients. I can't sleep well at night, and I might be facing a legal battle with disability -- not to mention the psychological issues associated with being a victim." The alleged assailant was arrested on aggravated battery and breach of peace charges, but has not yet been convicted.

Advanced-practice Nurses Seek Wider Scope in 24 States

Althouh physician leaders fear that expanding the range of services nurses can provide may threaten patient safety, advanced-practice nurses are the focus of a new wave of scope-of-practice bills that are making their way to state lawmakers.

At least 24 states are already considering bills or are expecting measures to be introduced this year. Measures address issues such as independent practice, doctor supervision of nurses, prescribing authority, or extended prescribing, including of controlled substances.

Maker of Vioxx Is Accused of Deception

Two teams of researchers with access to thousands of documents gathered for lawsuits over the painkiller Vioxx allege that Merck waged a campaign of deception to promote its drug, moving slowly to warn of possible hazards while at the same time dressing up in-house studies as the work of independent academic researchers. Alaskan Drug Database Bill Passes

The Alaska House of Representatives voted 23 - 16 Wednesday to pass a senate bill creating a prescription drug database in Alaska despite objections that it could threaten the privacy rights and security of Alaskans.

The bill empowers the Alaska Board of Pharmacy to place in an electronic file information about every prescription dispensed in the state for certain medications controlled under state law (schedules IA through VA), including medicinal narcotics such as painkillers, stimulants, tranquilizers, sedatives and other drugs that the Legislature might add to the scheduled drug statutes.

    FDA Alerts

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves a drug for marketing after determining that the drug's benefits of use outweigh the risks for the condition that the drug will treat. But even with a rigorous evaluation process, some safety problems surface only after a drug has been on the market and has been used in a broader population. This guide offers descriptions of some of the drug safety terms commonly used by FDA throughout the life cycle of a drug.
